Description for Senior SQL Server DBA:

Responsibilities include developing best practices and repeatable procedures for deploying databases, day-to-day operational activities including break/fix, space management, backup and restore, performance monitoring and tuning.  Makes recommendations for physical database design, architecture, and testing of Microsoft SQL Server databases.  Identifies data sources, constructs decomposition diagrams, provides data flow diagrams and documents the process.  Writes code for database access, modifications, and constructions including stored procedures.  Maintains version control for promoting changes into production environments. Good understanding of storage systems and various application integration architectures.  Supports production environments in a 24/7 environment.

Responsibilities for Sr. SQL Server DBA:

  • Executes and monitors installation, configuration, and consolidation of Database Administration technologies in both on-premise and Cloud (Azure, AWS) deployments
  • Designs and modifies database structure and system interfaces to include data interface and connections between databases.
  • Helps with database system users concerning database languages and procedures; answers questions on availability of existing data information, data structure, processing procedures and the feasibility of modifying existing structures and processes.
  • Contributes to design required to make SQL Server solutions highly available via failover or clustered configurations
  • Develops and maintains disaster recovery design/process documentation and leads efforts to regularly test and validate functionality meets business requirements
  • Supports data synchronization efforts.
  • Updates all diagrams, configurations, metrics reports, and requirements documents for new or lifecycle DB replacements or expansions
  • Develops and maintains security provisions to guard against unauthorized updates, copying, or destruction of databases.
  • Advises management on such issues as whether database system should be centralized or de-centralized, type of database system to be used, data modeling technique to be utilized, and how it is to be managed.
  • Migrates database instances to new hardware and new versions of software from on-premise to cloud-based databases and vice versa.
  • Performs backup commissioning and de-commissioning replication setup and management.
  • Creates/Reviews the technical diagrams architecture diagrams and modifies the SOP and documentations based on business requirements.
  • Ability to drive service excellence and continuous improvement within the framework defined by IT Operations.
  • Resolves enterprise trouble tickets within agreed SLA and raise problem tickets for permanent resolution and/or provide mentorship (Hierarchical or Lateral) to junior associates.
  • Mentors new team members in understanding customer infrastructure and processes
  • Updates SOP with updated troubleshooting instructions and process changes
  • Responsible for Incident and Problem response management and root cause analysis and all required documentation and communications to the organization and business for situational awareness.
  • Performs alert analysis for driving incident reduction
  • Escalate high priority incidents to customer and organization stakeholders for quicker resolution
  • Performs change management procedures according to IT policy
  • Migrates MS Access databases to SQL Server/Azure SQL
  • Provides support for MySQL databases in Azure
  • Provides after-hours support for multiple applications

Requirements for Sr. SQL Server DBA:

  • Associates Degree or higher in a related technical field or relevant work experience
  • 5+ years of professional MS SQL Server DBA experience in lieu of a degree
  • Experience moving databases from on-prem to the cloud utilizing Microsoft Azure
  • Experience with performance tuning, optimization, backup, and restoration of databases
  • Experience with SQL Server native monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
  • Previous experience providing in-house application support and working software development teams
  • Experience with backups, restores and recovery models.
  • Experience participating in code reviews.
  • Experience with System Change Requests.
  • Experience with Windows server including Active Directory
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
