Description for Senior Mechanical Engineer – Design for Manufacturability (DFM):

Seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer – Design for Manufacturability (DFM) for a fully remote, part-time contract opportunity supporting a leading manufacturer of automated industrial equipment for the building materials industry.

This individual will serve as the final engineering review point between Design Engineering and Operations, ensuring mechanical designs and engineering documentation are accurate, complete, manufacturable, and ready for release.

The role will review 3D models, drawings, assemblies, BOMs, and engineering packages to identify potential issues before they impact procurement, fabrication, machining, welding, inspection, assembly, or production. The successful candidate will combine strong mechanical design knowledge with practical manufacturing experience and will work closely with the engineering team to resolve issues before release to Operations.

This is an initial 3-month contract assignment requiring approximately 20 hours per week, with potential for extension and/or additional hours based on project needs and results.

Responsibilities for Senior Mechanical Engineer – Design for Manufacturability (DFM):

  • Review 3D models, drawings, assemblies, BOMs, and related engineering documentation for accuracy, completeness, manufacturability, and release readiness.
  • Serve as the final technical review between Design Engineering and Operations before engineering packages are released.
  • Evaluate mechanical designs for manufacturability, assembly, fabrication, machining, welding, and inspection.
  • Review machined components, fabricated parts, weldments, and mechanical assemblies from a Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) perspective.
  • Identify design and documentation issues that could create challenges during procurement, manufacturing, inspection, assembly, or production.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce complexity, cost, part count, and unnecessary tolerances while maintaining design intent and functional requirements.
  • Review drawings for critical manufacturing considerations including tolerances, critical inspection points, machining details, thread reliefs, fabrication requirements, and assembly considerations.
  • Work directly with Design Engineering to resolve drawing, documentation, and manufacturability issues before release to Operations.
  • Recommend practical design changes that improve manufacturability, quality, cost, and production efficiency.
  • Make drawing revisions or alterations when appropriate in coordination with the design engineering team.
  • Ensure released engineering packages are complete, controlled, and ready for efficient procurement and production.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Production, and external manufacturing vendors as needed.
  • Apply DFM, DFA, and design-for-cost principles to improve product designs and engineering documentation.
  • Help reduce rework and back-and-forth between Engineering and Operations by identifying potential manufacturing concerns earlier in the design and release process.

Requirements for Senior Mechanical Engineer – Design for Manufacturability (DFM):

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical or engineering discipline.
  • Strong mechanical engineering, mechanical design, or manufacturing engineering background with direct experience supporting the transition from engineering design into manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated experience performing Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and/or Design for Assembly (DFA) reviews.
  • Experience reviewing 3D models, detailed mechanical drawings, assemblies, BOMs, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong understanding of machined components, weldments, fabricated components, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Practical knowledge of machining, fabrication, welding, assembly, inspection, and manufacturing processes.
  • Strong understanding of engineering tolerances, inspection requirements, and production considerations.
  • Ability to identify manufacturing risks, documentation gaps, and design issues prior to release.
  • Ability to balance design intent with manufacturability, cost, quality, and production efficiency.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Engineering and Operations stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working independently in a remote environment while proactively engaging the team when technical input or clarification is required.
  • Versatile, hands-on engineering approach with the ability to work across multiple mechanical manufacturing disciplines.

Preferred

  • Previous experience working in or closely supporting a machine shop environment.
  • Experience with GD&T.
  • Experience with industrial machinery, automation equipment, capital equipment, or similar engineered mechanical products.
  • Experience working with externally manufactured components that are subsequently assembled internally.
  • Experience with Creo or a comparable 3D CAD platform.
  • Experience with Windchill or a comparable PLM system.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) or a comparable ERP system.
