Description for Design Engineering Manager:

The Design Engineering Manager leads the product design and development function, overseeing the creation, implementation, and optimization of new and existing products and automation systems. This role drives the design process from concept through production, ensuring products meet quality, regulatory, and cost standards while coordinating closely with manufacturing, quality, sales, and external suppliers. The manager provides technical leadership to a team of engineers, fosters innovation, and ensures designs are fully documented, manufacturable, and aligned with customer and business needs. Additionally, the role involves managing multiple projects, introducing new products, and applying welding and sheet metal expertise to deliver reliable, cost-effective solutions that advance the company’s engineering capabilities.

Responsibilities for Design Engineering Manager:

  • Lead the engineering design function, guiding a team of engineers and technical staff through the full product lifecycle from concept to production.
  • Oversee product development projects, including brainstorming, concept creation, prototyping, testing, and final design approval.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the design team, helping solve complex engineering challenges and supporting design decision-making.
  • Streamline design processes to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure high-quality outcomes.
  • Ensure all designs comply with regulatory standards and meet internal quality and customer requirements.
  • Allocate resources effectively, including personnel, materials, and equipment, to meet project timelines and minimize waste.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and collaboration across engineering and other departments.
  • Work closely with manufacturing, quality assurance, and external vendors to ensure designs are feasible, cost-effective, and manufacturable.
  • Manage the introduction of new products, including production ramp-up, process validation, and capacity planning.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date design documentation, including technical reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Identify risks in design projects and implement strategies to mitigate them, including design reviews and testing protocols.
  • Support budget planning and cost management for engineering projects, finding opportunities to optimize resources without sacrificing quality.
  • Communicate project progress, design decisions, and updates to senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Establish best practices and standards for design engineering within the organization.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and market trends to inform product design and process improvements.

Requirements for Design Engineering Manager: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, ABET accredited.
  • 5 years industry experience with ASME Section VIII, Div. 1 design by rule for use in 49 CFR Specification Cargo Tank production.
  • 7 years industry experience with 49 CFR design, test, and fabrication requirements for Cargo Tank Motor Vehicles.
  • 3 years FEA evaluation experience with respect to pressure vessels and welded sheet metal structures.
  • Experience with Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, and Aluminum welded construction.
  • Minimum 10 years of supervisory experience in product development, design, or manufacturing.
  • High degree of welding experience with sheet metal, weldments, and large assemblies.
  • Knowledge of ASME pressure vessels and non-code vessels.
  • Experience with ERP systems and CAD software for creating welding project drawings.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
