Description for Power Electronics Engineer: 

This Power Electronics Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end design, development, validation, and production support of high-power power electronics and motor drive systems used in heavy-duty mining and railroad applications. The Power Electronics Engineer works on robust, high-voltage traction and propulsion solutions designed to perform reliably in harsh, high-vibration, and demanding duty-cycle environments, while collaborating closely with cross-functional engineering, operations, sales, and customer teams to deliver safe, compliant, and field-proven products. 

Responsibilities for Power Electronics Engineer: 

  • Own all electronic and electrical aspects of new product development through production support
  • Design and optimize high-power traction inverters, converters, and auxiliary power supplies for heavy-duty equipment
  • Specify and integrate high-voltage power semiconductor devices and power modules
  • Develop cooling and thermal management solutions for rugged operating environments
  • Implement motor control algorithms and inverter-based control systems for high-power PMSM applications
  • Develop embedded firmware on DSP, FPGA, and real-time control platforms
  • Conduct hardware testing, dynamometer validation, and field trials
  • Ensure compliance with rail and mining safety standards
  • Troubleshoot field performance issues and support corrective actions
  • Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, and systems engineers for full system integration
  • Provide technical support to operations, field service, sales, and customers
  • Prepare technical documentation, test reports, and compliance certifications
  • Analyze customer returns and lead root-cause and corrective-action efforts
  • Support prototype build, instrumentation setup, and evaluation activities
  • Interface with customers to clarify design objectives and communicate project updates
  • Adhere to internal release-to-production and quality processes
  • Support the design and build of test cells for technology development
  • Maintain technical currency through continued education and technology awareness

Requirements for Power Electronics Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in high-power electronics design for transportation, heavy equipment, or industrial systems
  • Experience with high-power inverters, motor drives, and high-voltage converters up to 3 kV
  • Knowledge of PMSM machines and associated control techniques
  • Experience with laboratory and electronic test equipment and applicable standards
  • Familiarity with battery and hybrid energy storage systems for heavy-duty applications
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and critical-thinking skills
  • Ability to translate designs from concept and documentation into physical hardware
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to create, interpret, and manage engineering and manufacturing documentation
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management
  • Demonstrated ownership, ethical conduct, and ability to work effectively within a team
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and relevant engineering software tools
